KNOW YOUR WORTH | BLOGGING

I am in no means an experienced blogger and in no way am I claiming to be. I have been blogging a little over a year and in my time I’ve learnt a few things. One main thing that you learn when writing a blog is that people value your opinion. Strangers, people that you have never even spoken to actually value your honest opinion so whenever I get asked anything blog/beauty related weather it be simple questions like ‘what is your favourite mascara?’ or ‘how do I add BlogLovin to my blog?’ of course I try and answer as best and honestly as I can.

I am a member on Facebook of several blogging type groups. One of the main ones I use is amazing for any blog related help you might need. Myself and a few others have been noticing a few threads on there recently all relating to the same topic. It has become apparent that a certain brand (that I will not name) have been getting on a lot of peoples nerves lately. Firstly I saw others writing about it, and today I encountered it first hand. A PR company, and thats the only clue I’ll give. A lot of bossy, 'do this do that’ emails for pretty much nothing in return. Of course a lot of PR companies don’t always have budgets to pay people for blog posts and I completely understand that but can they really ask new (and old) bloggers to do all sorts, sometimes spending hours on blog posts for nothing? I think not.

Rewind 6 months and I would have jumped at the chance to potentially win a prize. Just writing a simple blog post and having the chance to win a PRIZE?! It doesn’t matter what prize, the point is you could WIN! I’ll be the first to admit I did a few of these ‘blog about us, promote us loads on social media and be entered to a draw to never win anything’ blog posts for a few brands but when you start getting better opportunities and you see your blog grow more, you realise that you don’t need to do that. I’d rather spend my valuable free time writing relevant blog posts or interacting with other bloggers than writing a pointless, non relevant post for nothing. I remember once I spent a whole college day perfecting a blog post (when I obviously should have been working!) to come third and ultimately, that meant absolutely nothing.

It’s all about knowing your worth. You, as a blogger are worth so much more than promoting brands for absolutely nothing in return. A lot of them try it on but you really need to remember you wouldn’t work for free so why should you spend your free time blogging, for free? You shouldn’t. And please don’t think you should. No matter what the companies tell you, it won’t get you anywhere any faster than a bit of hard work will.

  2. This blog post is on point and so well written! You just gained a follower today. I totally agree, you need to know your worth. I really don't mind doing unpaid posts, but one thing I do is I always write about things I truly love, not about every product I am receiving and email about. And I think this is hard for some people, especially for those that are quite new, because they just want to get out there and think writing about everything and partenering up with everyone is the solution. And it is not, because at the end of the day if you don't do it with passion for the product/service, your readers can see and it will look like just another "sponsored" post.

  4. I know exactly which company you are on about as I received the same email. As soon as I read it, I ignored it. It really wasn't worth my time. But I agree fully it is all about knowing your worth and what your time means.

  6. I received the same email, and I sent it straight to the trash. It's so annoying that companies think they can just take advantage of bloggers, we spend a lot of time on our blogs and it's kinda unfair for people to just expect us to do everything for free!

  7. 100% agree with this! When I first started blogging I just accepted everything and anything to review, just to be seen as a 'keen' blogger. I reviewed things that had no relevance with what I was actually interested in! Nowadays I review what I want to and what fits best. I've had some bizarre PR emails though, I don't understand how they think they can get away with it!! x

  9. I couldn't agree more with this! I wrote (and shared on my Twitter) an e-mail exchange recently between a company who were trying to get bloggers to work for free in exchange for exposure for their product/company. It's absolutely absurd!

  11. Would you like to read one of my replies to the brands who ask me for coverage for free? I've spent the past 6 years building my blogs and in total, I've blogged since 2004. I've been on twitter since 2007 and I put at least 3-4 hours into writing, editing, SEO, photography, publishing, and marketing to my audience into each and every blog post. My reach is impressive - with over 10,000 monthly readers, 56,000 Pinterest followers and then there's also twitter, bloglovin', GFC, google plus, Facebook and Instagram too.

    I'm sure you are aware of the costs of marketing to an audience that perfectly matches your demographic requirements of this size would be.

    I don't work for free, I wouldn't expect anyone to, I find it very insulting that you would expect people to work for free, it speaks volumes as to the sort of agency you are.

    Please remove me from your database I only work with professionals who have an understanding and appreciation for the extremely hard work and dedication bloggers put into marketing your clients for you.

    Best of luck finding bloggers wiling to do your digital marketing for you for free, I can guarantee the quality will match the cheapness.
    This only goes to the brands who are bossy, rude and bullying in their manor by the way xx

  12. I feel as the blogging world has grown more companies feel they can take advantage. I think bloggers and companies need to be balanced. A blogger should not ask for money if they know their following is not going to bring the return for the company. There are alternative ways to work with each other e.g. donations for projects and giveaways. However, a bigger blogger who has worked hard to get where they are is well within their right to ask for a fee! Great post! <3
